Sun Java on Windows Mobile!

by jaganath on July 8, 2008

J2ME for Windows Mobile is available from Sun at last! If you are a windows mobile user, you will know how horrible is the Java implementations on these devices. Most applets refuse to install - even if you manage to install one, they either do not work or display with some crazy resolutions. Out of all, IBM’s implementation had been the best to use on Windows Mobile.

Java

HP iPAQ 900 series will be the first set of WM phones which will feature the J2ME VM from Sun. Sun claims that the “Sun Java Wireless Client seamlessly integrates with the Windows Mobile 6.1 native user interface, allowing faster time to market for mobile applications”. That sounds nice, as even the best Java applications on Windows Mobile look totally out of place. (Example: Opera Mini)

One of the problems of J2ME applications is that 95% of them are only keypad aware, meaning they are not written for the PDA profile. On touchscreen devices with no keypad, they are useless.

A good VM and a decent set of applications can help see success for Java in the Windows Mobile camp.
