India Maps now available on Nokia Map Loader

by jaganath on August 9, 2007

Finally, India maps are back on the Nokia Map Loader. You can use these maps with the built in GPS system on the Nokia N95 or through an external bluetooth GPS receiver on other N Series handsets.

Unfortunately, the maps are not very detailed and many cities are missing. The whole India Map is only 10.9 MB in size, which is a tell tale sign of the details in this map. Compare this with the 1.3 GB US map!! I will check the details of the Bangalore map and report soon.

Hi Checked out the India maps through the Nokia Map Loader and they were better of without putting up these maps. I think its really sad that even though India is such a huge market for Nokia they have launched the maps application without any india maps whatsoever. I checked the Bangalore map and was really shocked to see that there is absolutly nothing. For now I would suggest using google maps.

I agree. But I won't fully call it as Nokia's fault. Digital Cartography is in its infancy in India, the government providing no proper indexing. We have to wait till the entire country, or atleast the major cities are fully mapped. A better alternative to Google is to use Mobile GMAPS as it supports GPS tracking too. Wish Google adds GPS to the Java application as soon as possible. (They do support in the Windows Mobile version)

Hi,

I recently bought a Nokia N82. Currently I am travelling in Bombay and I find the maps for the town section of Bombay to be extremely accurate. The names on roads are all there and the routing is typically spot on. The maps do not take into consideration some of the diversions and temporary road blockages, but they are still extremely good.

I also tried to find places in Delhi, which is my home town and over there I found that the maps are not as good as the ones for Bombay.

I have been using google maps & mgmaps on my older non gps phones for more than a year now and I would say that for bombay at least, the most detailed maps are available only from Nokia maps.

I still use google maps on my phone for the satellite images, but for bombay at least I have stopped using my handheld gps and the other apps as I find the inbuilt gps to be accurate enough and the maps to be of the highest quality..

Ambar,
Currently I am playing around with MapMyIndia’s five day trial for Nokia N95. I have not played around with the Navigation yet, but I do find that the maps are detailed when compared to Nokia Maps.

Jaganath,

I have checked out the mapmyindia website and found that their coverage as of date is the best for India. Does the mobile product also come with the same mapset as that shown on the website? Or is there more detail available.

One thing I have yet to find is a mapping product that can correctly find addresses in India to the block/building level. Most of the time when I try to check indian addresses, no product can give exact location. How do the mapmyindia maps compare to nokia maps in this regard? Have you tried out google maps on your phone? How good/bad is that? My experience with google maps has not been very good.

As of now I am looking at free mapping solutions for my phone so I have not really given the mapmyindia product a lot of thought. My experience of travelling around India in cars and bikes has been that it is best to just ask a person on the road for directions. Unless you are travelling at very odd hours or some very sparsely populated areas, this is still the most appropriate method i feel.

Ambar,

Yes, the biggest bane is the postal code system in India. In US any address can be located with a street name and door number. In India, this is very difficult since a typical address will be like: Door no: 22, 2nd cross, 3rd main, 4th block, jayanagar east, bangalore -22. I do not know how to search for this address on a navigation software.

Coming back to MapMyIndia, their maps are way detailed and much more accurate than Nokia India. PoIs are very detailed. i had some problems in searching on the Wayfinder software they provide. Otherwise, it is a neat package. It is better to use the Windows Mobile version than the Symbian version as it is offline and does not require a data connection.

If you don’t want to use Nokia’s maploader you can get maps from http://nokiamaps.moo.no . Works with Windows, Linux, Mac, and you don’t need to install anything on your computer.
