Hmmm.. We were expecting this announcement for a long time and finally it has happened. Sony Ericsson has announced the XPERIA X1, a new stylish looking Windows Mobile phone. This new phone packs in a punch with a 800×480 resolution screen and other goodies like A-GPS and auto focus camera. While this got many people excited, a close observation reveals that this phone is very similar to the year old Toshiba Protege G900 with the only addition of an A-GPS chip. See for yourself about the specifications here. The phone specifications as such are not so exciting because of this.
This is one trend that I notice from the Mobile World Congress this year. The specifications for new phones are pretty much predictable. All smartphones are coming with GPS and some extra memory. Convergence seems to have already hit the high point. No vendor is offering any new exciting features that can be termed revolutionary. This trend is worrying from the device maker as well as the mobile operator’s point of view as end users are now not forced to upgrade their handset.
